Chapter Eleven

Wearily, Oliver descended from the Harrington carriage and stretched his arms overhead. The trip home from London had been more fraught than he’d expected what with a sudden storm turning the roads into a quagmire. He reached back into the carriage and withdrew the leather satchel with the papers his father had requested. It seemed like a lot of bother for a few pages but he supposed Father had a good reason for wanting them.

“Well done.” He complimented the coachman who acknowledged Oliver’s words with a nod and a tip of his hat. “See that the team are wiped down and given an extra measure of oats.”

“Aye sir.” The man climbed down from the perch and guided the lead horse around the corner of the house and out of sight towards the stables.

Satchel tucked under his arm, Oliver bounded up the stone staircase to the front porch. Without knocking, he opened the door and stepped into the foyer of Harrington House. The aroma of roasting beef and bread baking enveloped him and his mouth watered, reminding him it had been quite some time since he’d last eaten.

“Why Oliver, I thought I heard the carriage rattle up the drive.” His mother appeared, gliding down the hallway towards him. “Is that it?” She pointed towards the leather satchel.

“It is.” He handed it to her.

“Your father will be so relieved you’ve returned home.”

As am I. He nodded. “Doing my duty.”

Not that London had been so terrible after all. He’d gone to Brooks’s once or twice to meet up with his dear friends Simon and Francis who had been with him that night he first clapped eyes on Evelyn in London. And of course one day had been taken up with the solicitor.

The days were fine. The nights were what had him tied up in knots. All he could think about was Evelyn, all he could imagine were her sweet lips and the way her body moulded against his.

Thankfully, his mother’s voice interrupted his thoughts in time for him to avert the pounding in his groin that inevitably came when he thought of Evelyn. “I’ll bring this to him straightaway and join you shortly in the sitting room.” She waved the satchel in the air.

“The sitting room is exactly where I want to go,” he replied. “A hot toddy will wash away the miles and warm my gullet.”

“I’ll let one of the footmen know and have it sent to you there.”

He thanked her and made his way to the sitting room where the first thing he did was to stoke the fire. Then he pulled a chair closer to the flames to warm his hands. A knock sounded; he turned his head to see Samuel in the doorway, twisting his hat in his hands.

“Samuel. What brings you here? I’ve only just arrived a few minutes ago.”

“Sorry sir, this couldn’t wait.”

He didn’t like the worried expression on the man’s craggy face. Foreboding pricked him. “Yes, out with it man.”

“One of our sheep has gone missing.
